We previously reported that Rakkyofructan decreased serum triglycerides, cholesterol, blood glucose and improved mineral absorption in rat. In this study, we investigated the effect of Rakkyofructan on blood glucose in healthy volunteers. In this open-labeled, randomized, and cross-over trial, 12 healthy volunteers were randomly divided into glucose only group and glucose with Rakkyofructan 5 g group (n = 12), respectively. Blood and urine samples were collected before as well as 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min after glucose intake. The peak values (Cmax) and area under curve (AUC) of serum glucose were significantly lower in the glucose with Rakkyofructan group than in the glucose only group (P < 0.05). Although further study is necessary to elucidate the mechanism, it is certain that Rakkyofructan has the potent anti-diabetic effect.
